An hour wrong, and every house moves

Under equal houses, half an hour of error changed nothing at all in this chart. Nor did a whole hour in one direction. An hour in the other moved all 10 planets into different houses. The damage does not scale with the mistake, and the direction matters more than the size.

What a clock actually changes

ONE NUMBER, NOT TEN

Move a birth by an hour and the planets barely notice. The Sun shifts by two and a half arcminutes, less than a tenth of a degree. Saturn moves so little that you would need four decimal places to see it.

The Ascendant is the exception, and it is the reason anyone asks for a birth time at all. It is the degree of the zodiac climbing over the eastern horizon at that instant, so it is set by the Earth's rotation rather than by any planet's orbit. The whole zodiac passes it once a day.

One degree every four minutes is an average

AND THE AVERAGE HIDES A LOT

The rule of thumb astrologers pass around is that the Ascendant advances about a degree every four minutes. Over a full day that has to be true, since 360 degrees have to fit into 1440 minutes.

It is only true on average. Sampled minute by minute across a day at this latitude, the Ascendant crawls at 0.20° per minute at its slowest and races at 0.41° at its fastest, against a mean of 0.25°. Two people born four minutes apart are separated by whatever the horizon happened to be doing at that hour, and that can be twice as much at one time of day as at another.

The effect is easiest to see by asking a different question: how long does each sign spend on the horizon?

Sampled at one-minute resolution over 24 hours at latitude 37.98°. The shortest sign takes 75 minutes to cross the horizon, the longest 150, a ratio of 2.00. Exactly two.

Six signs are quick and six are slow, and the split is not random: the quick ones run from Capricorn to Gemini, the slow ones from Cancer to Sagittarius. That grouping has a name that is nearly two thousand years old, and we will come to it below.

The horizon runs twice as fast at some hours as at others. The four-minute rule is an average, and the average is doing a great deal of work.

It depends on where you were born

The factor of two is a fact about Athens, not about the sky. Run the same measurement further north and it grows; run it in the southern hemisphere and the fast signs and the slow signs trade places.

Minutes for the quickest and slowest sign to cross the horizon, sampled at one-minute resolution over the same 24 hours.

At Oslo the spread runs from 29 minutes to 195, a ratio of 6.72. When the quick signs are rising there, a whole sign crosses the horizon in under half an hour, so a clock read to the nearest quarter of an hour is no longer telling you which sign the Ascendant is in.

At the equator the tradition says the effect disappears. Our measurement puts it at 1.20, so it flattens rather than vanishing, but the residue is small enough that a birth time is worth less there than anywhere else.

In Melbourne the quickest sign to rise is Virgo 0°00′. At Athens it is Aries 0°00′. Same sky, opposite hemispheres, and the whole scheme inverted.

What being wrong actually costs

TWO SYSTEMS, EIGHT ERRORS

Now the practical question. Take the chart above, shift the birth time, and count how many of the 10 planets land in a different house than they did. We did it under both of the house systems in common use, because they fail in different shapes.

Out of 10. Whole Sign houses are one per sign; Placidus divides the arc between rising and culminating, which produces unequal houses.

Read the small errors first. Half an hour in either direction leaves Whole Sign completely untouched, while Placidus has already moved 3 planets one way and 4 the other. That is the argument for equal houses, and it is a good one as far as it goes.

Then read the hour. An hour late and Whole Sign is still untouched. An hour early and every single planet has changed house, while Placidus has moved 4. The Ascendant slipped backwards over a sign boundary, and when that happens all twelve houses rotate at once.

So the two systems fail differently rather than one failing less. Placidus degrades in proportion to the error, a planet or two at a time. Whole Sign either survives intact or breaks completely, and where the break falls depends on how close the Ascendant already was to the edge of its sign. In this chart it sat at Cancer 12°26′, which is why an hour backwards was fatal and an hour forwards was harmless.

None of which tells you whether your own birth time is good enough. It tells you that the question has no general answer, and that anyone who gives you one without asking where the Ascendant fell in its sign is guessing.

The Moon is the other casualty

Among the planets, the Moon is the one a wrong hour genuinely damages, because it is the fastest thing in the chart.

Measured across 365 consecutive days. The Moon's orbit is elliptical, so it runs faster near perigee, which is why the daily figure varies by three and a half degrees.

Half a degree an hour is small next to the Ascendant's fifteen, but it is enough to matter twice: it can carry the Moon across a sign boundary if it was already near one, and it will change every aspect the Moon makes by that much. A conjunction inside a two-degree orb is not necessarily inside it four hours later.

Where the hour came from

THE INTERPRETATION, AND ITS HISTORY

THE GREEK WORLD, FROM THE 1ST CENTURY BC

The word horoscope is a fossil of exactly the measurement above. It comes from horoskopos, the hour-watcher, and it named one thing before it named a whole chart: the part of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. As Alexander Jones puts it, that point is what gave the horoscope its name.

So the birth time was never one input among several. The chart is called after it.

ALEXANDRIA, 2ND CENTURY AD

Ptolemy set out the fast and slow signs in the Tetrabiblos, book three, as signs of long and short ascension. In the northern hemisphere the run from Capricorn to Gemini rises quickly and the run from Cancer to Sagittarius rises slowly; the scheme reverses south of the equator and flattens on it.

That is the same grouping our table produced, from a rotating Earth model and a modern ephemeris, with nothing about the tradition built into the calculation. The astronomy was solid long before the interpretation attached to it.

ON HOW ANYONE KNEW THE TIME

It is tempting to imagine ancient charts as precise. They were not, and the person who has looked hardest at this says so plainly. Jones, surveying the surviving Greek and Roman material, concludes that the determination of birth times was left to lay observers and was not normally more refined than to the seasonal hour, which is to say roughly an hour, and a variable hour at that.

Of the roughly two hundred horoscopes preserved on papyrus, two mention a water clock. Sheer guesswork about the time, he writes, must have been the norm.

Ptolemy himself complains about it and recommends sundials and water clocks, though he is not a neutral witness to the accuracy of his own field. The technique was built on measurements no better than the ones people arrive with today.

AND WHAT THEY DID ABOUT IT

The response was rectification: taking a known life and working backwards to the birth time that fits it. Ptolemy gives a method in the Tetrabiblos, sometimes called the animodar, which corrects an uncertain Ascendant using the position of the new or full Moon preceding the birth.

It is worth being clear about what that is. Fitting a time to a life and then reading the life from the time is circular, and the circularity was there from the beginning. We mention it because the practice exists and has a genuine pedigree, not because we can defend it.

What we do when the time is unknown

OUR OWN DEFAULT, DECLARED

This app fills a missing birth time with noon. That is a convention and not a measurement, and it deserves to be said on a page rather than discovered.

Noon is chosen because it is the middle of the day, so the error is bounded at twelve hours in either direction instead of twenty-four. Every planet except the Moon will still be right to within a fraction of a degree. The Moon will be out by up to seven degrees. The Ascendant, the Midheaven and all twelve houses are meaningless.

A chart computed that way is still worth having, provided nobody pretends otherwise. It gives you the signs and the aspects, which is most of what a reading rests on. What it cannot give you is anything about houses, and a reading that leans on the fourth house of a noon chart is telling you about the convention we picked.
